Why Measure Swirl?

  1. To gain understanding. Swirl is happening in the engine. The more you know about it the better your understanding of the engine will be.
  2. Leading head design experts measure swirl. They believe the information is useful.
  3. Inconsistent swirl can be an indicator of a head with problems.
  4. Swirl requires energy. The energy used to create the swirl is not available to move air into the cylinder. Thus many experts believe that low values of swirl are desirable for racing engines.
  5. Swirl may affect the mixing and distribution of the charge. Thus high values of swirl may be desirable in applications which are more concerned with efficiency and emissions.
  6. Finding the optimum tradeoff between the mixing and filling effects of swirl may yield more power.
